Alice in Flatland

A young girl floats on a mattress in the middle of the sea. A close relative sits next to her, a world between them. As they float through this landscape, the inhabitants of Flatland appear. A series of interesting encounters await the girl, where bizarre characters bring new light and life to the flat vastness she experiences.

Alice in Flatland is an absurd family friendly show. Devised by the company using two sources. The Pool of Tears from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbot, a mathematical fiction which influenced Lewis Carroll’s work.

Flatland is a strange 2-D land populated by people who exist on a single flat plane.

As she floats through into unknown territory, a series of strange encounters with the inhabitants of the Flatland await her. As she argues and fights with these strange creatures, she experiences irrationalism, love, hope and light, when suddenly, magically, wonderfully, she discovers the 3rd dimension.

Alice in Flatland is a project of imagination and mathematical revelation, and reveals the complexity and richness of life that was right under our noses all along, shining a light on the unseen and finding perspectives and dimensions, yet uncharted.

As we follow Alice and the Flatlanders into a new Wonderland on this funny and touching journey, it begs the question… ‘is there another dimension in front of me now that I just can’t see?’

Premiered as part of the Bloomsbury Festival and will premiere in 2021.
